Supernatural 9x03

Hm, I'm kind of torn about this one. I did enjoy it, but at the same time I am sooo irked by some of the things they've been doing this season. IDK.

The negative

At first I thought the storyline with the fallen angels had potential, but it's looking more and more like they're not going to do anything new there. I don't see how the angels' organization is that different from what we already saw with the leviathans in S7, and they are still major assholes, except now they're nowhere near as mysterious or menacing as they used to be. I mean, compared to the first angels we've seen on the show, Bartholomew is so... meh (Zachariah and Dick Roman's bland lovechild, anyone?). Personally I think they should have stuck with Naomi if that's the route they were going to take -- she was more interesting and at least we were already familiar with her.

Another thing I didn't particularly care for in this episode was the way they dealt with the Sam/Ezekiel situation. I don't know if it's a writing issue or whatever, but I'm finding it hard to believe that Sam hasn't noticed anything weird. There's the lost time whenever Ezekiel pops up, and he's been told twice already that while he was unconscious, Dean somehow managed to defeat enemies all on his own, in a rather implausible fashion. Dean is a terrible liar, and Sam, of all people, should at least be able to see through that, no?

And don't even get me started on the reaper retcon. First we had that episode last season where for some unexplained reason reapers were suddenly visible to anyone, when every single time we had seen them before contradicted that, and now we find out that they're also using vessels? Not only that, but they glow like angels when they die -- are they angels too? That makes no sense to me, and it sort of ruins everything I thought was interesting about reapers in the first place.

The positive

My favorite thing in this episode was Castiel, by far. I did not see that coming at all, especially because I'm usually not very fond of episodes where Sam and Dean aren't the main focus, but this was pretty great. He was so damn lonely roaming the streets, it broke my heart. So far I'm loving Castiel's story this season, and I think Misha is doing a wonderful job with it.

Speaking of acting, I was pretty impressed with Jared in this episode. The way he seemed to alternate so seamlessly between Sam and Ezekiel was so cool to watch, and I'm enjoying what he's doing with both characters.

And I'm definitely curious to find out what the deal is with Ezekiel. I'm not convinced that he doesn't want Cas in the bunker just because it could be dangerous, and if I had to bet, I'd put my money on him having an agenda of his own -- I'm just not sure if that'll be a good or bad thing.

The neutral

Dean can be such a dick sometimes. I don't know if it was an issue with the editing, but the final scenes felt so abrupt, with Ezekiel telling Dean it was Cas or him, and Dean promptly kicking Cas out of the bunker. I get that Dean will always put Sam first and that's one of the things I love most about him, but I thought he would have hesitated a bit longer, or at least be nicer to Castiel when telling him he couldn't stay, you know? He's said it himself that he thinks of Castiel as family, so to me that scene was a little weird. IDK, maybe they'll pick up from where they left off next week?
